Since 2003, VanDyke has presented the much celebrated exhibition These Beautiful Hands at Emmanuel College; Philips Exeter Academy; Carney Center for the Arts at Regis College; Gordon College; Salem State College; and Merrimack College. The exhibition focussed on the beauty and wisdom of aging in America. In developing the exhibition which she began in 1992, VanDyke created plaster casts of hands of Seniors, many of whom were from Gloucester. The installation of hands is enlivened with excerpts of dialogue between VanDyke and the Senior participants. Relevant to the installation are paintings, drawings, and video that help to animate and celebrate the work. Now, in honor of Gloucester's 400th Anniversary and of VanDyke's poignant salute to a past generation, Jane Deering Gallery is pleased to bring These Beautiful Hands to the community.
