400 Trees Gloucester was founded by Peter Lawrence, President of Biomimcry New England .

400 Trees, a Gloucester 400+ program, combines natural history, environmental stewardship, hands-on education, and community participation to create a legacy for today and generations to come.

Why trees? In addition to the beauty trees bring to a city, a neighborhood of trees can be 10° cooler in the warm months than a treeless one. Trees provide half the oxygen we breathe, and they absorb significant amounts of carbon which in turn decreases damage and disruption caused by climate change as well as providing additional services.

The 400 Trees program has three stages, during 2023 to 2025: Planting 400 native trees in Gloucester; Locating and documenting the oldest 400 trees in the city; and Educating adults and children about the many values of trees to Gloucester and our local environment.
