The Flat File Project

About the Project

The Flat File Project is a collection of artworks housed at Jane Deering Gallery. Participating artists work in a wide range of media including graphite, ink, a variety of paints, photography, printmaking and collage.

The Project lives in a series of flat file drawers. Each participating artist has a portfolio in a drawer that contains six to twelve artworks (each in an archival clear plastic sleeve) along with a copy of the artist's resume and a consignment form. The consignment form includes all necessary information about the artworks in the portfolio — the title, date, medium, size and price of each work. The drawers are open to the public during gallery hours. It is not necessary to schedule an appointment to view work in the drawers. The Project is a great resource for artists, curators and collectors.

The concept for The Flat File Project began at Pierogi, an artist run gallery in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Pierogi was founded by artist Joe Amrhein in the mid-1990's with the idea of making works on paper available to a larger audience.

Submitting Work

Interested artists should contact the gallery: info@janedeeringgallery.com). The portfolio review with Jane Deering lasts approximately 1 hour. Artists should plan to bring 15 – 20 pieces of actual artwork (in a portfolio) to the review. Along with the work, include a resume, short statement, list of works for review (including title, date, dimensions, and medium) and digital files of the works being reviewed—image files should be in jpeg format and at least 72 dpi (dots per inch) for including on the Jane Deering Gallery website. If possible, digital files at 5 x 7 inches and 300 dpi in a jpeg format would be useful as this will allow for print publication. If the artist would like to also bring images of additional works not being reviewed, do so on a separate CD. Printouts of additional works at 8.5 x 11 inches are also useful. A word of caution: works incorporating charcoal or pastel are very fragile; please consider this before presenting works in these media for the Project.

Work accepted will be consigned to The Flat File Project for an agreed period. Consigned works are limited in size to 30 x 22 inches and under. Each work must be in an archival clear plastic sleeve. An excellent and very inexpensive resource for these sleeves is www.clearbags.com. At the end of the consignment period, the artist is asked to schedule a new review. Interested persons can visit Jane Deering Gallery during normal gallery hours and view artwork in the flat files.
